HOW TO STORE A MATTRESS THE RIGHT WAY

A high-quality mattress is an investment. Therefore, it’s essential to take special care when storing yours. If done improperly, your bed can become severely damaged. Here are three tips for correctly storing your mattress.

1. Clean it. First, remove the mattress from the box spring and strip all the bedding. Then, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit for at least an hour to remove any odours. Next, vacuum up the baking soda and air out the mattress for several hours to ensure it’s completely dry. 2. Cover it. Before moving the mattress into storage, put it in a waterproof mattress bag or wrap it in thin plastic sheeting to protect it from dust, dirt and debris. Make sure the plastic is sealed with packing tape. Avoid using heavy plastic as this could trap moisture inside and lead to mould. When storing a mattress long-term, it’s good to open the plastic wrapping every few months and air out the mattress. 3. Lay it flat. Although you may be tempted to store the mattress on its side to save space, this can destroy the internal structure, causing it to become lumpy and lopsided. Instead, lay the bed flat and place a tarp or other material underneath it, so it’s not directly on the floor. If you don’t have enough floor space, use large pieces of furniture to create an even surface to lay it across. Moreover, never store items on top of the mattress. Heavy objects can damage the springs or create permanent dents in the cushioning. Lastly, if you want to keep your mattress in top shape, it’s best to keep it in a climate-controlled space. For example, if you plan on renting a storage unit, you should upgrade to an air-conditioned one to safeguard your bed from severe temperature changes.
