5 TIPS FOR CLEANING YOUR SELF-STORAGE UNIT

Are you ready to vacate your storage unit? The task can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve been accumulating items in your unit over several years. Here are a few tips to help you stay organized and complete the chore quickly and efficiently.

1. Make a list First, take inventory of all the things you have in your storage unit. That’ll help gauge how much work you must do. Make a note of any large items you can readily see and count the number of boxes you need to move or sort through. 2. Come up with a plan Once you know what’s in your unit, strategize a plan for what to do with everything. Make a list of items you want to keep, donate, sell, throw away or recycle. Start with one small area at a time and finish going through it before moving to another. 3. Remove trash Throw away all the trash in your unit. Most storage facilities have an on-site dumpster. However, there may be rules or limitations on what you can throw away. If necessary, haul your trash off-site to a landfill or recycling centre. 4. Arrange for sold and donated items to be picked up If you’re selling or donating items from your storage unit, arrange to have them picked up directly on-site — schedule pick-ups before you clear out your unit to minimize the number of things you have to move. 5. Get the appropriate moving equipment Before moving, make sure you have all the necessary moving and packing supplies, including a dolly, boxes, garbage bags, furniture covers and shrink wrap. If you have to move large items, such as appliances or furniture, make sure you rent a moving truck or have a vehicle big enough to haul them away. Keep in mind that you may need more than one day to clean out your storage unit, so plan accordingly and enlist the help of friends and family. 6. Turn over the unit Once everything is out, sweep and mop the entire storage unit. You should leave the unit in the same condition as you found it. Finally, remove the lock and notify the manager you’ve vacated the unit.
